NewsDeadline to Protest Changed for 2010The state legislature has changed the protest deadline for residential homestead properties only. According to the House Bill #3496, homestead owners must file the notices of protest before May 1 or within 30 days after delivery of a notice of value. The deadline in previous years was May 31st. Of course, this means that appraisal district must mail the notices of value by April 1 on these properties for the new protest deadline to be in effect. The law goes on to say that even though the new deadline is April 30, “homestead owners who file their notice of protest prior to June 1 are entitled to a hearing before the appraisal review board certifies an appraisal roll”.So, the law sets an earlier deadline, but then appears to say that the new deadline doesn't really matter, since owners who protest by the old deadline of May 31st will still get a hearing. Nevertheless, Roberts Property Tax recommends complying with the early deadline on homestead properties in order to preserve all rights in the protest process. The old deadline of May 31 st is still in effect for all property other than residential single family with a homestead exemption.
